Disruptive Student In Classroom
The following is an excerpt from the Montana State University-Bozeman Brochure 'Managing Disruptive Classroom Behavior' dated August 1995
By identifying your expectations and acknowledging the class's input / needs you are in the best possible position to deal with students who later engage in disruptive behavior. While confronting negative behavior during class is tempting, it seldom proves to be successful. It is suggested that you request the student's time after class. If you feel the situation warrants the presence of a third party, it would be appropriate to call upon a colleague or notify the (Associate Dean for Academic Affairs) to join you.
If you feel you have followed a reasonable route and the student will not comply, consider it a conduct matter and refer it to the (Associate Dean's Office 771-4422) . A "reasonable route" suggests that you (1) were initially clear about your classroom expectations, and (2) had confronted the student behavior, allowed a response, and restated your expectations. In the event of recurrence, you may inform the student that he/she cannot return to class and that the (Associate Dean's Office) will be notified (you may request that the student(s) go directly to the Associate Dean's Office to expedite the process).
The Associate Dean does request a brief written statement from the instructor describing the incident(s) and any action taken or recommended.
Faculty sometimes fail to report alleged acts of academic dishonesty or disruptive classroom behavior because they fear being sued. These fears are not supported by the evidence.
In summary, be thoughtful and direct in communicating your classroom expectations; be open to adjustments based on student input; confront individuals and groups in an appropriate fashion; and use the (College) conduct system if it is warranted.
